Fire Safety Policy
Duties of all Onsite Staff in the Event of a Fire
IF YOU DISCOVER A FIRE:
- Leave building immediately via the nearest exit
- Close all doors behind you as you leave (if possible)
- Pull the nearest fire pull station (if applicable)
- Alert guests and staff in the immediate area to evacuate if necessary
- Notify a Muskoka Woods full time staff member
- If possible, from a safe place phone the fire department 9-1-1, or
- Contact the main office or on-call staff member via radio and give the details
- Gather at your emergency meeting location (if you do not know your emergency meeting location,
gather at the flagpole by the Main Office) - If you called 9-1-1, when the Fire Department arrives, identify yourself to them and provide
assistance as needed
IF YOU HEAR THE ALARM:
- Leave building immediately via the nearest exit
- Close all doors behind you as you leave (if possible)
- Alert guests and staff in the immediate area to evacuate if necessary
- Notify a Muskoka Woods full time staff member
- Contact the main office or on-call staff member via radio radio and give the details
- Gather at your emergency meeting location (if you do not know your emergency meeting location,
gather at the flagpole by the Main Office)
ON REPORT OF A FIRE:
Move to your emergency meeting location immediately for roll call and duty assignments
(if you do not know your emergency meeting location, gather at the flagpole by the Main Office).
FIRE EXTINGUISHERS:
- Ensure that your building has an approved fire extinguisher.
- Read the instructions and get familiar with the parts and how to use them. Don’t wait until something catches fire.
- Keep all fire extinguishers close to an exit.
- Use portable fire extinguishers for putting out small fires or containing them until firefighters arrive
(if safe to do so). - Your first priority is to be able to get out of the building safely.
Make sure ALL of these conditions exist before using your fire extinguisher:
- The fire is confined to a small area and isn’t spreading.
- Everyone else has left the building.
- Someone has reported the fire.
- The room isn’t filled with smoke
- You have an unobstructed escape route from the fire.
Keep your back to an unblocked exit when you are using an extinguisher on a fire. You want to be able to
escape easily if things get out of hand.
If smoke fills the room, leave immediately.
To use a fire extinguisher, remember P-A-S-S:
- Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you, and release the locking mechanism.
- Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
- Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly
- Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side.
