Lifting & Carrying

Lifting & Carrying – Safety Guidelines

All positions at Muskoka Woods could require physical labour at some point during the season. Whether that be moving
boxes, lifting equipment, shovelling snow, mopping floors, being assigned to work projects or many other ways in which
staff pitch in to create a safe and welcoming environment for our guests.

Often the objects you must lift are awkwardly shaped and could be heavier than what you normally lift. Make sure you
know how to avoid painful back injuries by:

  • ALWAYS letting your legs do the lifting. Stand over the object and bend your knees.
  • PLACING your feet so that you are balanced and KEEPING your back comfortably erect.
  • GRIPPING the object so that you hold it securely, and check for slipping.
  • LIFTING by straightening your legs.
  • MOVING your feet if you must turn while lifting. Do not twist the body. When walking with a load, short steps are best.
  • NOT bending over when setting a load down. Bend your knees until you are in the same position you were in when you
lifted the object. Make sure you do not jam your fingers.
  • NEVER attempt to lift a load that is too heavy for you – get help.
  • WEARING proper gloves when handling objects with sharp edges or slivers.
  • CHECKING to see if objects are slippery, too hot, or unevenly balanced.
  • WEARING the right safety shoes to protect your feet.
  • USING carts, hand tucks, etc. to do the work whenever possible.
  • MAKING sure you can fit through narrow places and that your fingers are out of the way when you set the object down.
